1188 FIELD NOTES is a series of works that records images born from close observation of familiar nature through screen printing.
No.001 is KABUTOMUSHI, inspired by the Japanese rhinoceros beetle, trees and surrounding plants. The image is separated into three colors — BLACK, OLIVE and MUSTARD — and each sheet is printed by hand at the 1188 studio in Japan.
Screen preparation, color mixing, registration and printing are all done by hand. A total of 22 sheets were printed, and 18 were selected as finished works for Edition 18. Screen preparation took approximately five hours and printing another five hours, for about ten hours of production work in total.
Because every sheet is hand pulled, small variations in ink density, texture and color overlap naturally occur. Those differences are part of the character of each individual print.
