1188 FIELD NOTES No.001 / KABUTOMUSHI
KABUTOMUSHI is a three-color, hand-pulled screen print by 1188 in Japan, inspired by the Japanese rhinoceros beetle, tree bark and surrounding plants.
Three screens, printed one color at a time.
This work is not a giclée or digital reproduction. A separate screen was made for each color — BLACK, OLIVE and MUSTARD — then the colors were mixed, registered and printed onto paper one layer at a time.
Even when the same screens and inks are used, small differences appear in ink density and registration. In KABUTOMUSHI, those variations remain part of each individual print.
22 sheets printed. 18 selected for the edition.
A total of 22 sheets were printed. From those, 18 were selected as finished works and kept as Edition 18. Screen preparation took approximately five hours and printing approximately five hours, for about ten hours of production work in total.
The work is printed on TMK Poster paper and measures 390 × 520 mm. All 18 finished prints were quality-checked by 1188.
